food, but it also can spoil quickly if it is not properly packaged, especially in hot weather. Regardless of whether the fish is inside or outside, if it has not been cooked, it will still need to be frozen or put on ice. Out in the ocean, professional boats have ice machines. This is because so many fish are caught that a machine is needed to be able to generate as much ice as possible. Once a large fish is caught, such as a sword fish, the fish is usually immediately gutted, with the inside stuffed with ice. For those who are just out to fish for fun, they should take a cooler that is filled with shaved ice. Some make the mistake of bringing a smaller cooler with an ice pack to save space, but this is not the best way to keep a fish fresh. Instead, bring a larger cooler, and be sure fill it about 2/3 or the way with ice. When you catch a fish, cover it in the ice as soon as you can. Contrary to popular belief, there is no “best” kind of ice to use for storing fish while on a trip. However, it is a good idea to use bags of shaved ice, just like the kind you can get in the grocery store for a party. This is because shaved ice is the easiest kind of ice to find already made. Whatever kind of ice you choose, remember to pack immerse your newly caught fish in it, so that when you get home, you will have a safe and delicious fish to cook, all thanks to ice.
